Appearance and reality
Says here that Republican members of Congress are beginning to notice not everything’s hunky-dory in Iraq.
“It's like after Katrina, when the secretary of homeland security was saying all those people weren't really stranded when we were all watching it on TV," said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.). "I still hear about that. We can't look like we won't face reality.”
Careful wording. We can still avoid facing reality. We just can’t look that way.

It's even worse - here's one I've been sending around about the Administration's latest *literal Mid-East smokescreen- - wtp
Maureen Dowd was a little off with her numbers in the NYTimes the other day, but if you add up *all* the casulties, civilian and military, in Israel/Palestinian Authority/Lebanon since the Hamass government was elected there and Hesb'Allah started shooting, you'll get a number FAR lower than the number of Iraqi civillians killed last WEEK - maybe lower by an order of magnitude!
Now I happen to care what happens in Israel, I have family living in the North (within the '47 boundaries) recently relocated to Tel Aviv to avoid the rocket attacks. BUT....
Maybe I'm getting a bit paranoid here. Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia have condemned Hesb'Allah, while Syria continues to fund that organization - which has effectively demolished the '47 state for "Christians" (with Muslims and Jews allowed).
For all our posturing, Syria is one of the few known sites of our "secret prisons" where a Canadian citizen disappeared to while traveling from the US to Canada (both North Amer. nations now admit mistakenly considering him a 'terrorist')
So I don't think we can come out against Syria with the literal skeletons it holds in its closet.
But back to Iraq - don't watch the man behind the curtain. In the last week, we have decided that "saving Iraq" means "saving Baghdad", about the equivalent of saying "saving the United States" means "saving New York".
The death toll there continues to rise at about 100 civillians a week (NyT) while we watch endless CNN coverage of *every* Lebanese kid recieving a shrapnel wound or *every* pane of glass broken in an Israeli maternity ward. Yes, the attacks on Israel and the counter-attacks on Lebanon and the PA must stop, the sooner the better, but look where the REAL STORY is.
"Lord, I have a problem!"
"What's the problem, Eve?"
"Lord, I know you've created me and have provided this beautiful garden and all of these wonderful animals and that hilarious comedy snake, but I'm just not happy."
"Why is that, Eve?" came the reply from above.
"Lord, I am lonely. And I'm sick to death of apples." "Well, Eve, in that case, I have a solution. I shall create a man for you."
"What's a 'man,' Lord?"
"This man will be a flawed creature, with aggressive tendencies, an enormous ego and an inability to empathize or listen to you properly, he'll basically give you a hard time. He'll be bigger, faster, and more muscular than you. He'll be really good at fighting and kicking a ball about and hunting fleet-footed ruminants, But, he'll be pretty good in the sack."
"I can put up with that," says Eve, with an ironically raised eyebrow.
"Yeah well, he's better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick. But, there is one condition."
"What's that, Lord?"
"You'll have to let him believe that I made him first."
:D :D :D
