Three questions about American democracy

Three questions about American democracy strike me as especially important nowadays. I don’t have the answers. But, over the next few days, I want to start exploring them here:

  1. Is ignorance about politics today higher than it was throughout most of American history? Or does it just seem that way?

  2. There have been moments in American history when cynicism about politics was as rampant as it is today. Yet, somehow, faith (or at least enough faith) was restored. How was that done? Are there lessons for today, or not?

  3. Finally, how much sustained cynicism and ignorance can a democratic republic survive?
